Abstract

Carabid beetles are abundant in agricultural crops and are important predators of invertebrate pests, and their activity-density can easily be recorded using pitfall traps. Consequently, these beetles are often chosen to monitor side-effects of pesticides in field experiments and were selected in a SETAC guidance paper as one of the test organisms for registration purposes (Barrett et al., 1994). Laboratory and semi-field methods for Poecilus (Pterostichus) cupreus (Heimbach, 1992; Heimbach et al., 1992a), for example, have been in use for several years. International validation of these methods will be concluded in the near future.
