Abstract
The first rigid acrylic polymer was polymethylacrylate (PMA) discovered in 1880 by Kahlbaum. In 1928 Röhm & Haas Company of Darmstadt commercialized clear, transparent sheets of PMA (Ulrich, 1982; Utracki, 1989a; Stinson, 1992). Since PMA is rather soft (Tg = 6°C) it had to be copolymerized with ethylmethacrylate (Tg = 75°C) (Salkind et al., 1959). However, the main obstacle to commercialization was the high cost of acrylic monomers.
