Summary
At sites of tissue repair, phenotypically transformed fibroblast-like cells, myofibroblasts, are responsible for fibrous tissue formation. In vivo studies of injured rat cardiac tissues have shown that myofibroblasts (myoFb) express membrane-bound angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) and angiotensin (Ang) II receptors. In vitro, these cells have been shown to generate Ang I and II peptides. Locally generated Ang II acts in an autocrine/paracrine manner to regulate myofibroblast collagen turnover in injured tissue.
