Abstract

This chapter explores some of the ways in which economic restructuring has changed the fortunes of the British middle classes since the early 1980s. For, whilst the period since at least 1945 till the middle 1980s, was one of growing prosperity for the middle classes, there have, in the past decade, been arguments that the middle classes are now facing growing problems. I particularly want to focus on the three issues of organisational restructuring, state policy, and gender and ethnic divisions.
