Abstract

—The paper gives an overview on recent developments in the field of “Wireless ATM” broadband mobile radio systems. As a motivation for WATM the range of possible applications and their requirements are given. The impact of the radio channel on the design of WATM systems is explained with main emphasis on the physical layer problems. Currently there is a large number of research projects and standardisation activities related to WATM. Therefore, a brief overview on these topics is given as well.
