Occurrence and Possible Function of Inflammation-Induced Expression of Sialyl Lewis-X on Acute-Phase Proteins

Abstract

The complex-type glycan structures of acute-phase glycoproteins (APPs) are subject to marked changes during acute and chronic inflammation (see for review Van Dijk et al., 1994). In vivo studies with mice transgenic for human α1,-acid glycoprotein (AGP) and in vitro studies with human hepatoma cell lines (Mackiewicz et al., 1991) and isolated human and rat hepatocytes (Pos et al., 1988; Pos et al. 1989; Van Dijk et al., 1991a; Van Dijk et al. 1991b) have indicated that these changes are not simply determined by changes in serum concentration or in secretion rates of acute-phase glycoproteins. The biosynthesis of the glycans in the hepatocytes of the liver appeared to be affected as part of the hepatic acute-phase reaction. Inflammatory cytokines, like IL-6 and IL-lα, and glucocorticoids are involved in the regulation of these processes.
