Applying Telepresence to Education

A Victorian time traveller visiting us today would be amazed at the use of advanced technology in today’s hospitals, homes, offices and factories. However, a glance at our schools and colleges would suggest very little has changed, at least in our delivery methods. Education is under increasing pressure. It is being accused of failing to deliver quality or to embrace efficiencies. Our classrooms and lectures halls are becoming overcrowded, the numbers are increasing but resources are remaining stable or indeed in some sectors reducing. Against this rather depressing backcloth many are seeing technology as the new saviour [1, 2]. However, too often, technology is advocated solely for increasing efficiency, whereas, it is argued here that its real power lies not just in efficiency savings but also in improving the quality of education.
