Abstract
The seminar that initiated this book considered the designation, exploitation, legislation, politics and practical tools for management of protected areas. Contributions to the present volume focus on three principal aspects of the protected area concept, namely existing definitions (Chapters 1, 2 and 3), community-based conservation and the concept of sustainability (Chapters 5, 6, 7 and 8), problems of identifying priorities for management (Chapters 9, 10, 12 and 13), and prospects for implementation (Chapters 4 and 11). Taken together, they present a number of different considerations for the role of protected areas in biodiversity management.
