Abstract
The extraordinary advances in fiber and semiconductor technology have resulted in a very rapid growth in the performance of lightwave communications systems. The evolution of optical fiber transmission systems is illustrated in Fig. 9.1 [1], where the transmission capacity is shown for both commercial and experimental systems.
