Abstract

Water is used in considerable quantities in the developed world, in the UK for example each inhabitant uses 150 litres per day. Untreated sewage water has a negative effect on the environment and can be contaminated with potentially pathogenic microorganisms. It is imperative therefore that sewage and industrial pollutants receive treatment, which essentially means biological treatment, involving the activities of a wide range of microorganisms.
