Abstract

In our considerable discourse relating to serodiagnosis of M. pneumoniae, we have reiterated the potential for rapid diagnosis given the varied methods for IgM detection. Whereas one may seek to determine the presence of IgM for this purpose, all-or-none, the next level of debate lingers over the issue of how soon the measurement is possible after the patient is first seen for a respiratory complaint. Ideally, it is desirable to obtain a definitive answer immediately as is often the preference with other investigations. For the purposes of M. pneumoniae infection, is an hour, several hours, a day, or several days acceptable? The necessary timing for obtaining such information is obviously dependent on the intensity of the presenting illness.
