Abstract
The principles behind corrosion protection based on CP coatings are best understood if we take a quick look at the three other methods most widely used at present for protection of metals from corrosion:
The first method is simply coating the metal with a material, such as an epoxy, an enamel, an inorganic silicate polymer, or an alkyd resin, that physically impedes the agents causing corrosion. These agents primarily include a combination of H2O (as liquid or vapor), 02 and salt. Such a physical impediment is however powerless against the formation of cracks or pinholes, and against vapor phase or other slow diffusion of the corroding agents through the coating matrix.
