Implications for Theory, Policy and Future Research
While, as noted in Chapter 1, there are many valuable studies of SMEs in different parts of the world, we believe this study is unique in the combination of three important elements of its methodology: (1) its focus on exporting SMEs, on the problems they face and on their use of various kinds of support to alleviate these problems, (2) its analysis of such support systems on the basis of evaluations by the firms which use these services rather than those of the support suppliers or outside observers, both of which are common in the literature, and (3) its emphasis on comparisons of results across sectors, countries, and types and sizes of firms.
