Abstract
International air transport is a driving force in the world economy, both as a major industry in its own right, and as a provider of vital services for a wide range of economic activities. the sector has played an important role in the globalisation of production and distribution systems, and without extensive air transport networks major service industries such as tourism would not have expanded to today’s levels. As the world continues to change rapidly, the international aviation sector is confronted by a wide variety of new challenges. There is therefore a need to deepen the understanding of the role of air transport in the international economy and to review the regulatory structure which governs civil aviation.
