Abstract
We all recognize the importance of a familial predisposition to cardiovascular disease as a substantial risk factor in the clinical evaluation of patients. In atherosclerotic syndromes it carries predictive value similar to tobacco use or hypertension Many relatively rare cardiovascular syndromes have been explained by single gene defects and many others, including the most common, clearly have a familial component. A comprehensive description of these genetic influences is beyond the scope of a brief chapter but several excellent reviews are available.1,2Here I will describe the progress made recently in the explication of three cardiovascular diseases, each of which illustrates different strengths and weaknesses of genetic analysis.
