Postpartum Care of Young

  • Julian Lombardi

Parental care is a subset of total parental investment and happens when parents increase the chances of their offspring’s survival at the expense of their ability to invest in others. It involves parental behaviors1 that provide support and maintenance to offspring. Here, I restrict my consideration of parental care to the investments made in oocytes, ova, or embryos following their initial release from the maternal body. This is an admittedly narrow interpretation of parental care. It does not include parental investments that are made in potential offspring prior to their release from the maternal body.
