Immunizations in Pediatric CAPD/CCPD Patients

  • Chapter
Book cover CAPD/CCPD in Children

Abstract

Because pediatric chronic peritoneal dialysis (CPD) patients often require specialized care in a tertiary center, provision of primary, preventative care can be easily overlooked. Central to this care is the delivery of routine childhood immunizations. Although, in the age of managed care, it remains to be determined who will deliver preventative care to complicated and chronically ill CPD patients, it is imperative that the nephrologist caring for these children moniter the immunization status of their patients and keep abreast of the latest recommendations for immunizations, as morbidity and mortality from vaccinepreventable disease remains a significant concern. This is especially true as these patients move toward transplantation, and the need for immunosupressive medications. This chapter will discuss the current recommendations for routine childhood vaccines as well as recommendations for special immunizations in children maintained on chronic dialysis. Where available, data regarding the response to these vaccines in pediatric patients on CPD will be discussed.
