Abstract

BNL experiment E910 is the first high-statistics experiment with large-acceptance and particle identification to study proton-nucleus (pA) collisions at AGS energies. Our main goal is to survey these collisions for a variety of targets (Be, Cu, Au, U) over the range of energies available at the AGS (6–18 GeV/c). The results of these studies will increase our understanding of nucleus-nucleus (AA) collisions by:

  1. 1.

Elucidating the mechanisms of energy deposition and particle production in excited nuclear matter.

  2. 2.

Standing as baselines against which to judge “interesting” results from AA collisions.

  3. 3.

Serving as vital input to cascade codes which attempt to model AA collisions.
