Esophageal Dysphagia

Abstract

The organs involved in swallowing; that is, the pharynx, the esophagus and their associated sphincters, transport from the mouth to the stomach what is swallowed, prevent the reflux of gastric contents into the esophagus, pharynx and respiratory tract, and clear from the esophagus any gastric contents that are refluxed. Peristaltic contractions of the musculature of these organs transport what is swallowed from the mouth to the stomach. The disrupted, uncoordinated or failed peristaltic contractions may disturb the propulsion of a swallowed bolus and lead to the symptoms of dysphagia(difficult swallowing) or odynophagia(painful swallowing).
