Some Recent Studies on the Development of New Metal Mediated Reactions for Organic Synthesis

Abstract

The increasingly sophisticated array of reagents and methods which require a metal mediated transformation have revolutionised Organic Synthesis over the past 50 years, and the practitioner of this art now has an enormous “tool kit” from which he can make a judicious selection, based on his own particular requirements of chemo-. regio- and stereoselectivity. While it could therefore be argued that there is now little need for further additions to this armamentarium, the environmental and economic constraints imposed by the modern chemical industry provide a considerable challenge and stimulus for further improvement; particularly in terms of catalytic processes, atom efficiency and the ability to carry out controlled reactions leading to the creation of several new bonds in a single step.
