Abstract
An α-ketoglutarate dehydrogenase-deficient mutant of Bradyrhizobium japonicum, the endosymbiont of soybean, is delayed in early symbiotic development, but eventually forms normal, acetylene-reducing bacteroids. This result suggests that B. japonicum bacteroids are not as dependent on the energy-yielding functions of the TCA cycle as previously believed, and raises the possibility that other routes for malate and succinate catabolism could be important during symbiotic nitrogen fixation.
