Modeling and Simulation of NDE Inspections

Abstract

Modeling has traditionally played a significant role in the development of quantitative NDE techniques. The interfacing of NDE models with the output of typical computer-aided design (CAD) software and with interactive visualization-based tools, has also led to the development of model-based NDE simulators. Such simulators can examine complex components for NDE inspectability issues in the same fashion that finite element stress analysis tools, for example, can quantitatively evaluate the stresses of a design. Over the last nine years the Program for Integrated Design, NDE and the Manufacturing Sciences at the Center for NDE, Iowa State University has played a major role in developing NDE modeling and simulation capabilities. Funded by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and conducted cooperatively with Northwestern University, this program has produced advanced models and simulators for x-ray, ultrasonic, and eddy current testing. Here, a summary of the current status of these models/simulators is given as well as a discussion of some future directions for this new technology.
