Abstract

The use, abuse, and dependency of substances includes a wide variety of compounds consisting of tobacco, alcohol, illicit drugs, prescription medications, inhalants, and designer drugs. No sex, race, social strata, or culture are immune to the effects of drug abuse and dependency. Exposure and experimentation with mood-altering substances occurs in some unfortunate individuals as early as before birth,in utero, from drug-using mothers, but more frequently among youth in their early teens. Peer group and media are powerful influences for the initiaton of drug use and abuse. Physiological, sociological, and psychological determinants pave the path to dependence. The negative effects of drug abuse and dependence are widespread. Drugs affect psychological, family, friends, work, health, legal, and social functioning in destructive ways. Treatment approaches are varied and can be matched to clients according to beliefs, severity, drug type, stage of recovery, motivation, and comorbidity.
