Effect of Arachidonic Acid Alone or with Prooxidant on Aldehyde Dehydrogenases in Hepatoma Cells

  • Chapter

Part of the book series: Advances in Experimental Medicine and Biology ((AEMB,volume 463))

Abstract

Aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) is a family of several isoenzymes (Lindahl, 1992; Vasiliou et al., 1996) important in the cellular defenses against exogenous toxic aldehydes (Linda 1992; Yoshida, 1992) and against endogenous aldehydes, such as those derived from ld peroxidation (Lindahl and Petersen, 1991; Canuto et al., 1994). The latter appear to influence cell growth and differentiation in some tumour cell lines (Barrera et al., 1994; Canuto et al., 1995).
