Abstract

The potential for an electron near a metal surface is required for many problems in surface physics and, in particular, for quantitative analysis of the recent reflection mode (e,2e) experiments 1. Detailed investigations of low energy electron diffraction (LEED) data 2 has established that the surface potential can be written in the form is accurately described by a three parameter potential in which the parameters are determined by a fit to density functional theory calculations. We write the potential 2 in the form
