Abstract
On the eve of the twenty-first century, with information and technology substantially affecting traditional systems of learning and decision making, it is essential to scrutinize the relevance and effectiveness of our existing institutions, including universities. This entails analyzing the roles and functions of these institutions—in consultation with their “customers.”

Notes
Refer to “Civic Entrepreneurship” by Charles Leadbeater and Sue Goss, DEMOS and Public Management Foundation, UK, 1998.
This relates in particular to the area of applied developmental science, e.g. psychology, sociology, social work in regard to training requirements, however, it is not restricted to these areas in regard to community involvement.
Notwithstanding the pressure on most universities to be for-profit institutions.
Australia’s first university, Sydney University, was established in 1850 in Sydney; the number of universities has grown to approximately 42 universities today.
The AYF’s vision is that it will: • Initiate constructive and progressive change; promote the integration and coordination of youth programs, services and policies; and establish its place as a respected and catalytic organization in youth affairs; • Exhibit leadership in policy development, in the promotion of applied research, in fostering positive ideas for change and in acting as a facilitator for their implementation; • Influence governments, academic institutions and the community; and • Promote collaboration and networking in the youth sector.
The AYF recently agreed to a work-placement arranged through the internet. A foreign social science student had to absolve several placements in community organizations as part of his course work over five years. He not only was an invaluable asset to the organization during his placement and added value through applying his knowledge to the AYF’s work, but also he clarified his future professional career goals.
The AYF funded the Australian Centre for Equity through Education—Better Schools for Better Future and provided funds to five different pilot full service schools sites. For further information about these programs nlease refer to the AYF web-site.
