Abstract
The effectiveness of thiabendazole hypophosphite (Arbotect 20-S®) and microencapsulated propiconazole (Alamo®) as therapeutic treatments for mature American elms (Ulmus americana) naturally infected with Dutch elm disease is examined. Both products are often effective as a single treatment when properly applied by exposed root flare injection at the highest dosage rates allowed. Both products can move with the transpiration stream through infected sapwood that is still functional, stop the pathogenic action of the fungus, and allow the tree to wall off the infection with a layer of new sapwood. Follow-up removal of the symptomatic limbs is advised. Neither product is effective when the tree is systemically infected past the root crown and into the root system. Complete distribution of the chemical in the functional sapwood throughout the canopy of the treated tree is critical to success of disease management. Prudence is indicated when selecting candidates for therapeutic treatment.
