Graves’ Disease — A Historical Perspective

  • Chapter
Graves’ Disease

Part of the book series: Endocrine Updates ((ENDO,volume 6))

Abstract

While the eponym “Graves’ disease” has been generally accepted (at least in the English-speaking world) as the appropriate designation for a condition that we might more properly term “autoimmune hyperthyroidism” or “toxic diffuse goiter”, we will continue to employ “Graves’ disease” in this chapter, despite the lack of universal agreement regarding this designation and the dispute about the attribution of credit for the original description (see below). We will attempt to provide a historical perspective regarding these matters.
