As a Vehicle in Training Psychologists for Revised Professional Roles

Abstract

With an awareness of the many challenges facing children, youth, and families, the Boston College Counseling Psychology program strives to strengthen student commitment to social justice and work with diverse populations in underserved areas (Brabeck, Walsh, Kenny, & Comilang, 1997). Given the severity and complexity of the problems facing children and families, the program also seeks to prepare scientist-practitioners to design, deliver, and evaluate comprehensive corrective and preventive interventions in collaboration with other professionals and community partners (Knitzer, 1993; Lerner, 1995). The goals of training students for interprofessional collaboration and for comprehensive and socially active roles in the delivery and evaluation of services has led us to examine and gradually revise our methods of teaching and training. New methods of professional training are being considered by other professions, as well. Sherman, for example, in Chapter 12 illustrates how clinical legal education can be conducted to address new roles for lawyers.
