Abstract

Last April, Senate Majority Leader Trent Lott asked me to speak on his behalf at a ceremony in the U.S. Capitol commemorating the 50th anniversary of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO). The event was a celebration of NATO’s victory in the Cold War and the Alliance’s decision to invite new members to join the Alliance for the first time since 1980. I took the opportunity to lay out my vision of NATO in the next century. The future of NATO is bright if it adapts to post-Cold War Europe.
