The Limitations of Present Day Syntax Theory

Abstract

Syntax theory, as currently articulated, cannot stand alone as a theory of grammar. The goal to achieve a syntax-only generative grammar that can produce all the well-formed and acceptable sentences in a language is doomed to failure. It is impossible on the basis of its own implicit assumption.
