Abstract

Critical heat fluxes (CHFs) were measured on single same sized flat plate heaters located at one end of six rectangular ducts with different cross-sectional areas in subcooled He II for bulk liquid temperature range of 1.8 to 2.1 K at atmospheric pressure in order to clarify the heat flow in a He II contained duct with a sudden change in its cross-sectional area. One side of the test plate was attached to the end plate of the duct made of Fiber-Reinforced Plastics (FRP), and the other end of the duct was opened to pressurized He II. The ratio of the cross-sectional duct area to the heater area was varied from 1.0 to 3.5. The CHFs increased with the increase in the ratio and approached a constant value: the CHF on the same sized flat plate in a pool of He II without duct. A CHF correlation can express the experimental data within 20 % error.
