Exploitation of Protoplast Fusion Technology in Improving Biocontrol Potential

  • Chapter

Abstract

There is world wide swing to the use of ecologically safe and environmentally friendly methods of protecting crops from pests and pathogens. Control methods using pesticides are not the long term solutions to the crop plants because single application of pesticides is seldom sufficient therefore repeated applications are required to combat the pathogen. Such an approach demands huge economic cost and has adverse environmental impacts. Continuous applications of chemical pesticides may lead to development of resistant strains of pathogens. Biocontrol which depends on the activity of naturally occurring organisms offers an alternate method to check the pathogen and answer to many persistant problems in agriculture including problems of resource limitation, non-sustainable agriculture system and over-reliance on pesticides (Bagyaraj and Gonvindan 1996; Cook and Baker 1983).
