Abstract

Significant changes in the health care industry and in behavioral health care in particular are forcing managers and professionals in the field to reconsider the approaches to “quality.” As concepts such as total quality management and continuous quality improvement are increasingly applied to health care delivery (see Gaucher & Coffey, 1993), traditional definitions of quality are being challenged and the term is acquiring new and sometimes widely varying meanings. This is creating considerable confusion, especially for owners, managers, and administrators of startup behavioral group practices (BGPs) who are increasingly directly responsible for meeting standards of quality that reflect different values and perspectives than they had previously addressed.
