A Model Validation Data Set Respect to the Air Pollution Deposition in Northern Winter Conditions

The data set is based on field observations carried out in the north-east of Estonia during December 1995 – February 1996. The air pollutants were emitted from stacks of the Estonian and the Baltic thermal power plants (maximum capacity ca. 1.5 GW each), located at 17 km from each other. First of them has two 250 m high stacks, second four 150 m and two 180 m high stacks, producing high momentum and buoyancy plumes. Other sources (Figure 1) are either tens of times weaker (Ahtme, Kohtla- Järve and Sillamäe TPP-s, chemical plants) or have too low stacks for regional-scale transport (Kunda and Slantsy). The kukersite oil shale is fired in both power plants. The chemical composition of fuel and operational regime were rather stable during the season. The flue gas was characterised by high content of sulfur dioxide and alkaline fly ash (30 % CaO, other oxides, a number of trace metals).
