Abstract

Material requirements planning (MRP) had its beginnings in material control in job-shop manufacturing. The evolution of material resource planning (MRP II) has continued to address the needs of the job shop. The development of the Just-In-Time philosophy in many companies has caused a shift from job-shop manufacturing to repetitive (or semirepetitive) operations. Contrary to some beliefs, MRP II continues to play a major role in the planning of capacity and operations as well as execution support of Just-In-Time manufacturing.
