Abstract

A speedboat race is about to start from a small island in the middle of a wide river, which flows from north to south. Some of the racers are told to go south, to go around a buoy that is 1 mile downstream of the island, and then to return to the island. The remainder of the racers are told to go east (crosscurrent), to go around another buoy that is also 1 mile away, and then to return to the island. Thus, all racers must cover a distance of 2 miles. (See Figure 1.1A on page 2.)
