Abstract

Every cancer arises through a multistep process involving a series of genetic events. While one or more of the steps requires activation of normal cellular genes into oncogenes (1) the ultimate course and frequency of the neoplastic process are largely determined by an interplay of exogenous and endogenous factors (1,2). Permissive factors such as hormones act as co-transforming agents and potentiate carcinogenesis (1). These are balanced under normal conditions by cellular protective factors which suppress the neoplastic process.
