Abstract

Polymer blends containing poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-16%-3-hydroxyvalerate, ( P (HB-coOHV), were investigated by incorporating poly (ε-caprolactone), (PCL), poly (styrene-co-35%-acrylonitrile), (SAN), or poly (styrene), (PS), as the second component. Blend concentrations of 20/80, 50/50 and 80/20 weight percents were solvent cast from chloroform and analyzed for miscibility using DSC. Biodegradation studies were conducted using an exposure to the extracellular depolymerase from Penicillium funiculosum at 28°C for 48 and 96 hours. Weight loss and characterization of the exposed samples using GPC, SEM and NMR were used to determine degree of biodegradation. Blends of P (HB-co-HV) with PCL or PS were found to be immiscible at all concentrations investigated. Blends of P (HB-co-HV) with SAN were found to be miscible in all concentrations investigated. Biodegradation results for the miscible blend showed a lower weight loss as compared to the immiscible blends investigated. Weight loss increased with increasing P (HB-co-HV) content for all blends investigated.
