Generalization of the Surfactant Concept: Micellization of Zwitterionic and Mesoionic Amphiphiles in Formamide and N-Methylsydnone

  • Chapter

Abstract

We have demonstrated that various zwitterionic and mesoionic amphiphiles possess surfactant properties in formamide and N-methylsydnone, comparable to those observed in aqueous media. We also found that solvophobic interactions in formamide and N-methylsydnone resemble the hydrophobic interactions encountered in water. Self-association of these amphiphiles in non-aqueous solvents was accounted for in terms of interactions between the polar heads of the molecules. The contribution of the polar head to micelliz-ation appeared to be different in formamide and N-methylsydnone than in water, which was largely attributed to solvation effects. Micellization of surfactants in aqueous media involves the formation of hydrogen bonds with water, whereas dipole-dipole interactions are believed to be dominant in formamide and N-methylsydnone.
