Monitoring Congenital Anomalies in Populations Exposed to Environmental Mutagens

  • Chapter
Mechanisms of Environmental Mutagenesis-Carcinogenesis

Abstract

Congenital anomalies (CA) are believed to be one of the best mutation endpoints for the genetic monitoring in regions polluted by environmental mutagens (Crow, 1971). It is well known they are heterogenous by their etiology. Their fluctuation in time may correspond to the changing concentration of mutagens. The determination of CA should be based on medical-statistical data. But it may be possible only in the case of detailed identification of each CA in the proband and detailed analysis of other additional data (Czeizel and Sankaranarayanan, 1984; Bochkov and Sram, 1989).
