Abstract

The acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) is a vast, rapidly evolving phenomenon. An inherent difficulty in a book chapter on AIDS, no matter what its focus, is maintaining the timeliness and relevance of its content. Our understanding of the basic and clinical science components of AIDS is ever-expanding. Similarly, the complexities involved in developing vaccines and cures and, indeed, in providing health care for patients are sobering.
