Abstract

Platelets contribute to atherosclerosis in a number of ways. At sites of injury of arterial walls, they can promote smooth muscle cell proliferation by releasing growth factors1,2. Platelet-fibrin thrombi that form at injury sites on vessel walls or on advanced atherosclerotic lesions can be organized and contribute to vessel wall thickening3–6, and arterial thrombi composed of platelets and fibrin are responsible for clinical complications of atherosclerosis: thromboembolism and occlusive thrombosis7,8. Activated platelets in a thrombus can also release materials that cause vasospasm9.
