SSC Dipole Magnet Accelerated Life Test Program

Abstract

An accelerated life test program is proposed to verify reliable operation of the SSC dipole magnet over its designed useful lifetime. A shortened series of thermal, magnetic, quench, vibration and environmental exposure cycles will be applied at above rated stress levels to demonstrate the integrity of the collider dipole magnet design. A statistical model is presented as the basis of our approach to reducing the span-time and cost of this testing. Details of the test plans including automation of the cyclic stimuli and data acquisition are addressed.
