Waves on Corrugated Surfaces: K-Gaps and Enhanced Backscattering

  • Chapter
Book cover Laser Optics of Condensed Matter

Abstract

Several unexpected phenomena involving the propagation of electromagnetic waves on corrugated surfaces arise from high-order processes in the interaction of a photon (or a surface polariton) with the surface corrugations. Although these phenomena are expected to occur for waves of any type, they have been observed and discussed more extensively for visible light.

  9. In an optically active medium, T can be negative and k-gaps are known to occur. In particular, if Γ + W = 0, there is a k-gap equal to 2W, as noted by H. Kogelnik and C. V. Shank, J. Appl. Phys. 43, 2327 (1972). A general classification of gap shapes when Γ + W = 0 is given by P. Halevi and O. Mata-Mendez, Phys. Rev. B39, 5694 (1989).
