A Quantitative Model Analysis of Year to Year Changes in Concentration and Deposition
Concentration and wet deposition of sulphur and nitrogen species show large variations from year to year. On basis of measurements of these species it takes several years to discover significant trends. If it were also possible to measure dry deposition fluxes in an efficient way then it would be easier to determine an overall trend, because one can expect that the sum of dry and wet deposition is much less sensitive to climatological changes than the dry or wet deposition separately. In all cases measurements are required which show no systematic change in calibration over the years. A more sophisticated method do determine trends is to use a long-term long range transport (LRT) model to compensate for the year to year meteorological influences. The model to be used for such a purpose must be able not only to describe the variations in time correctly but also efficiently, because calculations have to be carried out over long periods.
