Impact on GIS Design by Reducing the Rated LIWL

Abstract

This paper represents a contribution to the paper entitled “Insulation coordination in Gas Insulated switchgear Against Lightning Overvoltage” of GIS Session. When the high performance surge arrester is applied, the maximum overvoltage appearing in GIS can be reduced and the rated Lightning Impulse Withstanding Voltage Level (LIWL) can be reduced. This paper introduces the influence on the design of 550kV GIS and the consideration to maintain the insulation reliability of GIS in the case of the reduction of LIWL.
