Logic-Level Synthesis

Logic-level synthesis (sometimes also called logic synthesis) closes the gap between high-level synthesis and conventional CAD tools for physical design. During the late 80s great progress was made in research and development, which has led to powerful commercial tools. These tools gain more and more importance in industry because they shorten the logic design process significantly and provide optimizations outperforming manual designs in many cases. As can be seen in this chapter, logic synthesis permits technology independent specifications of circuits. Thus it is quite easy to use another technology or manufacturer, without having to start from scratch. In this chapter some of the fundamental ideas and algorithms underlying logic-level synthesis tools are presented.
