Abstract

Vanadium is a ubiquitous group V transitional element (atomic weight 50.94). An essential trace nutrient in chicks, dietary deficiencies were observed to result in decreased body and feather growth although in rats, impaired reproductive ability, the sole consequence of vanadium lack is seen only after four generations (1). In humans, the total vanadium pool is estimated to range between 100–200 ug although symptoms of deficiency have not yet been established (2). Vanadium exists in several valence forms (-1 to +5) and in red blood cells and adipocytes is converted intracellularly from vanadate (V03-,+5) to vanadyl (V02+,+4) (3).
