Abstract

Barium metal is still a laboratory curiosity, as it is very similar to calcium which is much cheaper. One limited use of barium is as an alloy with magnesium and aluminium as a ‘getter’ for high vacuum valves, when it is allowed to combine with the last traces of oxygen inside the finished valve. It is claimed that the thin film of barium which is produced in the process acts as a high temperature lubricant to any moving electrode systems.
